Election Time Frames
City ordinance provides municipal elections be held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November of odd numbered years. At each election the office of the mayor is elected for a 2-year term. The 5 council members from the City's 5 wards and 2 council members at large are elected for 4-year staggered terms.
Iowa voter registration qualifications require a person to be a U.S. citizen, a resident of the state, and at least 18 years of age. Voters must be residents of the City to be eligible to vote in City elections. Persons may register to vote, change their voting address, or change their legal voting name at the County Auditor's office, located at 414 East Third Street In Suite 201. The County Auditor's telephone number is 563-263-5821.

The next City election is Tuesday, November 7, 2023.
The positions included on this election will be:
- Mayor (2 Year Term)
- First Ward Council Member (4 Year Term)
- Third Ward Council Member (4 Year Term)
- Fifth Ward Council Member (4 Year Term)
- At Large Council Member (4 Year Term)

The following is information regarding the 2021 election cycle:
The first day to file nomination papers is Monday, August 23, 2021; the last day to file is Thursday, September 16, 2021.
The petition and affidavit of candidacy forms can be picked up at the City Finance Department, the County Auditor's office, or can be found on the Secretary of State's website. These forms are required to be filed in the County Auditor's office no later than 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 16, 2021. Note that the filing location is the County Auditor's office beginning with the 2015 election. These forms can also be accessed and printed using the links below.
Petitions must include a minimum of 25 signatures of eligible electors for each office. The signatures on the petitions for the candidates for the 2nd and 4th Ward Council positions must be those of residents of the respective wards. Signatures on the petitions for the Mayor and At Large Council positions must be those of residents of the City.
