The Ultimate Sacrifice
Since May 10, 1839 the men and women of the Muscatine Police Department have protected the rights and freedoms of its citizens. Their efforts have come with a heavy price. In the history of the Muscatine Police Department 4 of its members have been killed in the line of duty. The department continues to honor their memory by furthering the work they began all those years ago. Officer Thomas Moore, Muscatine's first line of duty death, was only the 2nd law enforcement officer killed in Iowa's history.
Since 1869, 156 police officers have died in the line of duty in the State of Iowa. Their names are marked on the Iowa Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The Memorial is on the grounds of the Capitol Building in Des Moines.
