About the Station
The Transfer Station and Recycling Center is the facility from which city operations such as garbage collection, composting, and recycling are managed. The Department of Natural Resources and the Environmental Protection Agency monitor landfills and pollution of local cities and towns. Every city is required to abide by the guidelines that these entities lay out.
2017 Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving Holiday Hours and Service Schedule
Veteran's DayThere will be no Refuse Collection on Veteran’s Day, Friday, November 10, 2017. Refuse collection for Friday and Monday will be on Monday, November 13, 2017. Curbside recycling will be picked up on Veterans Day, Friday, November 10th.
The Transfer Station will be closed on Friday, November 10th. It will reopen on Saturday, November 11, 2017. The hours of operation for Saturday, November 11th are 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
The Compost Site will be closed on Friday, November 10th. It will reopen on Saturday, November 11, 2017. The hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Thanksgiving HolidayThere will be no Refuse Collection on Thursday or Friday, November 23 and 24, 2017. Refuse Collection for Wednesday and Thursday routes will be on Wednesday, November 22nd. Refuse Collection for Friday and Monday routes will be on Monday, November 27th.
Curbside Recycling will be a day behind due to the holiday. Recycling normally picked up on Thursday, will be collected on Friday, November 24th. Curbside Recycling that is normally picked up on Friday will be collected on Saturday, November 25th.
The Compost Site and Transfer Station will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 23rd and 24th. Both reopen on Saturday, November 25th. Saturday hours for the Compost Site are 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Saturday hours for the Transfer Station are 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- Transfer Station - A 24,200-square-foot building used as a refuse dumping area, some recyclable sorting, and for loading of transfer semi-trailers
- Recycling Center - A 13,600-square-foot building used for receiving, sorting, bailing, and shipping of all recyclables that is operated by city Carton Recycling of Iowa city
- Administration Wing - A 10,500-square-foot building that contains management offices, a receptionist / scale operator, a shower room, locker rooms, a break room, tipping floor viewing room, and a public meeting room
- Equipment Garage - A 18,400-square-foot building that contains a heated truck wash bay, maintenance area, and heated storage for refuse collection trucks, transfer trailers / tractors, recycling trailers, and dumpsters
History of the Station
In December 1991, with the landfill near Stockton reaching maximum capacity and the passing of the Iowa Waste Volume Reduction and Recycling Act of 1989, the Muscatine City Council approved a recommendation to pursue the construction of a recycling center and transfer station at 1000 South Houser Street. Construction of a state-of-the-art complex began in July 1994. The official dedication ceremony was held October 28, 1995.
